Castellammare del Golfo is one of the most beautiful places in the west coast of Sicily. The name is roughly translated "Sea Fortress of the Gulf." It is so named because of the medieval fortress in the harbor. This harbour still works as well as for tourism than as for commerce.
The Gulf is a set of environments which to their spectacular beauty splendid coasts, to the east low and open, to the west high, jagged, and over them a mountain chain with some ecological niches which are unique in Sicily.
In august you can assist to a very spectaculary religious procession out of the sea.
